GitHub named a Leader in the Gartner first-ever Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants

[Collection]

The vision behind GitHub Copilot is simple: augment the innate human creativity of every developer with a boost from generative AI. Our goal has never been to create technology for technology’s sake, but to increase the happiness and productivity of every developer by keeping them in the flow longer, helping them move faster, and lowering the barrier to entry altogether. With millions of developers and over 77,000 organizations using GitHub Copilot, we feel we are making rapid progress toward that goal and realizing our vision.

Today, GitHub has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants.

Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants, a square divided into four quadrants showing the placement of several tools along axes labeled "ability to execute" and "completeness of vision." GitHub Copilot is in the top right quadrant.

As part of the report, Gartner evaluated 12 AI Code Assistant vendors based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision. GitHub placed as the highest in ability to execute and furthest right in completeness of vision.

“Leaders execute well against their current vision and are well positioned for tomorrow,” according to Gartner, and we see this as a testament to the hard work of our teams, partners, customers, and the 100 million-plus developers who use and improve our platform every day.

Industry-leading innovations

While we celebrate the position as a Leader in 2024, this is an opportunity to reflect on the innovations we delivered over the last year that forever changed the way developers and organizations build software with AI-native solutions. A few of those include:

  • GitHub Copilot Enterprise places the institutional knowledge of organizations at developers’ fingertips and infuses GitHub Copilot throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • GitHub Copilot Workspace redefines the developer environment by introducing an AI-native experience where any developer can go from idea to code to software, all in natural language.
  • GitHub Copilot Extensions unlocks unlimited possibilities with an ecosystem of partners that enables developers to build and deploy to the cloud with their preferred tools and services.
  • GitHub Copilot Autofix makes remediation a reality, helping developers and security teams keep new vulnerabilities out of code and address their backlog of security debt.

Priorities for the road ahead

We’ll continue to invest in what makes GitHub Copilot the most widely adopted AI developer tool, whether that means advancing application modernization, streamlining code migration, enhancing performance, reducing technical debt, boosting development speed, or addressing skills gaps.

This is only the beginning. As we work with customers, partners, and developers, the magic of GitHub Copilot will extend to an even wider audience. We envision a world where novice, hobbyist, and professional developers alike can tap into the magic of Copilot to channel their creativity into building software. We believe this accessibility will unlock a world of one billion developers, collaborating together across the globe, as our CEO Thomas Dohmke shared earlier this year.

Let’s build from here.
